When you pray,
move your feet.

African proverb, quoted by Annunciation's principal, August 27, 2025

On the morning of August 27, 2025, a shooter fired 116 rounds through the stained glass windows of Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, MN. Inside were hundreds of students, along with teachers, staff, parents and parishioners attending the first all school mass of the new school year. Two students, 10 year old Harper Moyski and 8 year old Fletcher Merkel, were killed, dozens of others were injured and the community was changed forever. At a press conference later that day, Annunciation’s principal quoted an African proverb saying “When you pray, move your feet.” And ever since that day, that is exactly what our community has done.

In February 2026, a group of Annunciation parents and community members launched Annunciation Light Alliance, a nonpartisan, parent-led advocacy group working towards meaningful change so that no other community has to experience this kind of loss and trauma. The Alliance seeks to foster shared responsibility and thoughtful action alongside policymakers, educators, faith leaders, and community partners to help ensure all Minnesota children can learn, play, and worship in safe environments free from gun violence. We are advocating for a brighter future to honor Harper, Fletcher and the students of Annunciation.
